Transparency
Moving away from the election onto the meat of the new agenda…
Transparency.
There was a lot said about it during the election. In fact as I recall there was a lot said about it at the election before. I think it seriously harmed Brian’s re-election chances that he was elected on the promise of making municipal politics “transparent” when the appearance was quite the opposite. That however is in our rear view mirror.
What we have now is transparency and the question of how to go about it. Many people have their own frustrations with our towns opaque bureaucracy. I myself have an issue with the 500 page agendas with no index and the need for some method to broadcast a simple list of agenda subjects to the town so residents effected know to attend.
There are also the basics like live streaming and archiving all meetings of all committees rather than beholding to Rogers to do it. Though I will admit they do a great job of editing council meetings together.
One thing I would also love to see comes from the election meet and greets. They were a wonderful opportunity to talk to a Councillor or Mayor over a coffee. To sound out thoughts and ideas. A council meet and greet of some sort would go a long way to opening up council to the public.
My hope is that working with the town becomes easier and that talking to your representatives doesn’t happen every four years.
Is this an issue worthy of creating a committee?
This is of course a discussion so I would be delighted to see other thoughts and ideas on how this council can make transparency more than just a promise.
