A bedtime story about a wolf.
It is generally true that lies do not beat truth. In other words, if something is a lie, it is not true and therefore cannot defeat the truth. This is because the truth is based on facts and reality, whereas a lie is a false statement that is intended to deceive or mislead.
However, it is possible for a lie to be believed or accepted as truth for a period of time, especially if it is told by someone in a position of authority, in this particular example; say a candidate for Mayor, or if it is repeated frequently as in this example by the supporters of this candidate. This is why it is important to be careful about what we believe and to try to verify information before accepting it as true. It is also important to be honest and to avoid spreading lies or misinformation, as they can have negative consequences for individuals and society as a whole. Sadly in this “fictional” case, the liar gets elected and then begins to do the very things he accused the previous council of doing. Say for example in terms of nepotism, spending waste and secrecy.
The lies also impacts the credibility of the person(s) spreading the lies. In order to have a lie beloved the “liar” needs to have credibility, however this is used up like currency with each lie told until the account is empty. This is particularly relevant in an election when lies burn up the credibility of those elected. Thus they begin bereft of both credibility and integrity. In this example, let’s say the Mayor has complete control of council and through nepotism, the town staff too. The only way to remove such a Mayor would be if they blatantly committed a crime, became bankrupt or became incapacitated and unable to do his job. This is where the secrecy would come in. You can’t catch a crime if nobody is there to see it.
Boy, I’m glad this is a fiction, because if it were to happen in a small town you would have a breeding ground for corruption to illustrate what happens when lies are used in a municipal election.
If for example someone was elected by inferring or outright shouting out that the previous council and Mayor was corrupt, well then they would be duty bound to launch an investigation when they were elected. You know, follow up on a promised forensic audit.
That could never happen because it’s findings would reveal the empty black heart of the one who told the lie to begin with.
