Get to work now

In the last few weeks no less than 3 people have had serious conversations with me about becoming a member of Council. In at least two of those conversations, the focus was on how to win an election.

My advice was (and always will be) to instead focus on the responsibilities of Council. If you truly feel you have what it takes to properly and completely fulfill those responsibilities, there are plenty of people who will help you WIN an election.

Sure, you have a four year mandate, but if you ignore the responsibilities of doing the job responsibly, no campaign will allow you to rise to the top for a re-election bid.

Sadly, in today’s social media environment the paradox exists that also means that even IF you do everything a great Council member should, dirty politics CAN defeat you.

So, for those considering replacing some of the current Council members in two years, get to work now! Don’t assume you know what the job is all about based on watching the current council. Instead, look around us. Look at other municipalities. Look at past politicians you respect. Look at the carefully worded legislation crafted to provide the framework for the positions. THEN, look in the mirror. If you like what you see and think you want to “serve” your community… start talking to your neighbours and friends. It starts there!

For others, consider what your role could be in ensuring “dirty politics” gets denied at the polling stations in 2026 and beyond. We can ALL make a difference. EVERY VOICE MATTERS!
