October 26, 2026!

So many people have asked me this week when the citizens of Wasaga Beach can replace the existing Council. So I thought I would share the actual date with you.

It may seem like October 26, 2026 is a long way off, but really… it’s only 26 months.

Over the last few days it has been very interesting seeing the sheer number of people who also ask what it takes to be on Council. I have watched Wasaga Beach Council very closely for about 12 years. So, let me tell you what I think it takes.

First of all however, we should focus on what a Council member should never be.

We should avoid at all costs, giving the job to single issue candidates. The reality is that once their issue is dealt with… they become cheerleaders for the others and will not embrace all issues.

We should avoid re-electing candidates who lean towards their peers and ask, “how should I vote” on ANY issue. If they don’t care enough about the issues to form their own opinions, they should resign.

If a candidate is looking to gain your support by promising unrealistic things (Like building a downtown) then RUN away from their name on the ballot.

If a candidate cannot articulate to you exactly what issues affect our budget… don’t consider letting them spend your money.

What we don’t want are Council members who are going to conspire outside of open Council to decide the direction of any issue.

Discussions that move the business of the town forward should take place in Council chambers where the public can listen to the reasoning. What we have now are 6 who seem to nod and raise their hands when told 95% of the time.

Let’s talk about what is needed?
I hear people say we need youth, people with new ideas. That may be true to an extent, but the majority of decisions made in running a community our size are related to spending and allocation of resources. So youth is great… as long as there is a string understanding of finance and Human Resources issues.

The reality is that MOST issues decided by a council are made after Council members have had opportunity to review detailed reports, research to their hearts content and read, read, read.

One of the most diverse websites filled with information for prospective elected officials is hosted by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.

If you are thinking that you might be interested, start there.
They even have great videos shared on YouTube. I used one a week ago to explain how MPAC assessments don’t really affect total taxes. (They actually affect distribution of taxes instead)

The one thing I hope is that people considering stepping into public office don’t unnecessarily worry about is the vile, unnecessary bullying. I truly hope with proper leadership that some of the tactics used by the bullies can be thwarted.

Please start to research. Not thinking of public office? That’s OK. Perhaps your research can help you identify and suggest a good candidate.
What I know is that Wasaga Beach residents are tired of a Council that appears to serve their own needs above the needs of a community.

No more favours for friends!
No more bullying of those who disagree!

No more passing budgets that blame everyone else for Councils increases!

Let’s start talking to those we know that are not afraid to do the right thing even if it’s not the popular thing.

Tomorrow, I hope to delve into the online bullying. Let’s take a trip back in time to elections from 2014, 18 and 22.

Until then… It’s starting to getting dirty as our Current Council is losing popularity. The old guard have been activated to attack those who dare question or defy them. But fear not… the truth always comes out. While waiting… be kind to everyone.
