Playing Fast and loose in Wasaga Beach

Remember when Mayor Brian Smith said he would do things so fast that by the time we realized what was going on it would be too late? Well, establishing an Entertainment Corporation was one thing, it’s done! But now, there are upcoming letters of incorporation for a “Development Corporation”.

In trying to understand the “why” of a development corporation, just look at the Entertainment Corporation. It was shared publicly that a municipality was not allowed to make profit on any events they planned. Our Council and staff know this! Solution… create a corporation and use it as a loophole. It allows profit, decisions without public scrutiny, risk without municipal control and arms length from liability. To top it off, they planned on over $400,000.00 of wages for the top four employees in the first year.

But, do we as citizens want to build a governance infrastructure based on loopholes? Do we want what are paramount to new divisions of our government, but instead of being part of our HR road map, they are separate corporations? I don’t!

Want more information? Ask your elected officials WHY they need these corporations. If they cannot provide you with an open, honest answer they are proud of and you are comfortable with… then you be the judge.
