Some people’s souls have grown over the course of covid, they have stepped up and helped even when the risk wasn’t fully understood. Many of those (but definitely not all) work for the town of Wasaga Beach. They ensured that the work got done and that the municipality supported the efforts to get over covid.

A notable exception would be councillor Joe Belanger who’s soul shrank two sizes and shrank again when he voted against town staff getting a day off as a reward for their hard work. There is little the town can do for its staff, but a token paid day off is something many other municipalities are looking at. It costs little and the missed work will assuredly be made up over the following weeks.

It’s worth watching the video of the council meeting and observing yet another instance when the rest of council took pains to distance themselves from this petty and vindictive act by a councillor who is already unpopular in town hall.

What a great gift it is that families of staff can have a four day weekend and not have to come back in on Friday. The vote passed 6-1 (Belanger voted no).
