Unify to heal?

I said Wasaga Beach needed to unify in order to heal the divide.

The reality is that there will always be some divide, as long as there are decisions that will cost some and profit others.

However, when groups of people come together to support a project that is important to a large segment of our population, relationships are forged that last a lifetime. (WDI was proof of that.).

Wasaga Beach traditionally had two golf courses that serviced the recreational needs of our community for years.

With the closing of the Wasaga Sands Golf Course and Development plans for Marlwood, the recreational landscape is changing.

In order for these recreational properties to be converted into hundreds of millions of dollars in housing, our Town Council will have to allow zoning changes.

My personal opinion is that these changes should never be allowed. My opinion is particularly true in areas where residential neighborhoods have been built abutting the fairways of these properties.

Some would say it is a Not In My Back Yard mentality. Absolutely it is. But I think it is important to say that in some cases, Not In My Back Yard is a relevant and fair position.

People who invested in homes that border golf courses have typically paid a premium for their lots and chosen a lifestyle, based on knowing their backyard would be forever used as recreational green space. They did not buy property on land abutting a future development!

In my opinion, our elected officials should fight tooth and nail to maintain these lands as open space. I felt this way as the Marlwood citizens fought and now I feel the same way as the Wasaga Sands citizens begin their fight.

I encourage everyone to rally together, offer any support possible to those mounting opposition to this development.

At a bare minimum, EVERYONE with even a remote interest should register to speak at the public meeting.
