Wasaga Beach is an open toilet

This is how the headlines are currently reading and dozens of YouTube videos surface about the issue of what are claimed as mainly East Indians defecting on the beach and not using the available toilets.

The real issue frankly isn’t necessarily the instances of public defecation. nor even whether there needs to be a ban on walled tents on the beach (beach operated by the province). By all accounts this has been going on for many years and has been successfully ignored by generations of politicians.

The problem is it’s now out of the bag and the public is seeing the Town of Wasaga Beach has a problem with people shitting and burying the shit in the sand. The videos now have accused views in the millions. It has been featured on CTV and syndicated across Canada.  It’s the name “Wasaga Beach”. It’s not calling out the provincial park. People who have kids playing on the beach and in the water are second guessing coming here.

The problem is further compounded by members of the town of Wasaga Beach council calling the complainants “dark and racist”, and calling on their supporters to “rebuff“ (bully and harass) the people who say they are witnesses to these acts. The Mayor Brian Smith at first denied it was happening at all until the sheer weight of these headlines had him tossing the blame at the province.

As if that wasn’t enough, one of the main complainants who posted a video got a “visit” from the OPP. This apparent attempt to intimidate didn’t work because she videoed the visit from a clearly embarrassed officer. I wonder who (trying to suppress the story) called in a favour from the OPP?

Wasaga council are indeed holding the shitty end of the stick because as I pointed out, this isn’t the provinces problem, it’s Wasaga Beach in the headline. Doubtless the MNR will commission a report and in a few years may do…something?

No. This is the job of Mayor Smith to do some heavy hitting with the MNR. To either allow Wasaga bylaw onto the beaches (as they have in the past) or get the rules of the provincial park modified to stop enclosed tents. The town also needs to increase signage prompting people to use the facilities. They also need to publicize these efforts to redeem the towns reputation. Most of all the town needs to be seen DOING something, anything rather than just bullying anyone who reports it.

However this simply isn’t being done. Mayor Smith has an aversion to getting his hands dirty.
