Wasaga Weaponized Bylaws
Wasaga Weaponized Bylaws
Reviewing the year, one issue really jumped out as affecting my wife and I personally. When the town chose to go after our business in what we consider an attempt to silence us, it only made us stronger.
I wrote a very detailed description in discussion number 211 and I encourage everyone to review it.
There are a few updates that many people are not aware of regarding the circumstances discussed in 211.
Yes, we hosted a community barbecue to highlight the forced removal of our signs. What happened next was amazing. The number of customers that showed up, came in and spoke with us, expressing their support has been overwhelming. It has had a net effect of ensuring Grandmas Beach treats has enjoyed our best season in 18 years.
Many have completely ignored their requests and await any consequences.
Some may not have had notices given to them because of who they are.
But what I wanted to point out was that there was one business owner I have spoken to who made a REMARKABLE decision not to expand, in part… because of “signs”.
The business owner I spoke to had opened one business and was told to remove some of his signs. He was in talks to open a second business and had started purchasing necessary equipment. After the visits from bylaw, he decided NOT to negotiate the lease of his second property and Wasaga Beach lost an opportunity to have another business open. Wasaga Beach lost jobs and great offerings, all because of… signs!
Our Council will never hear about this, as these reports obviously don’t get fed back to them. However… I do know that all of the employees of that particular business have NOW (many for the first time in their lives) taken an interest in politics. I’m thinking it’s not good news for the current council.
Our business at the corner of Mosley and 22nd survived the sign bylaw attack and we plan on submitting a sign permit for some spectacular signage on the outside of our building this winter so we can install before summer. We shall see if approval of such a permit is possible for all businesses or only those supported by Council.
Have a re-read of #211 and then, when driving around town… think of what next summer will look like.
I was motivated to write today’s discussion because today was the first day we had our new ovens operational. Our growth at GBT has been remarkable this last year and I know it is because we have the best customer base any business owners could ever hope for!
